CAREERS

Ready to step up? Here’s how commercial talent progresses in 2026

If you’re building a career in life sciences sales, marketing, market access or commercial operations, you might be wondering: what does progression actually look like now? One thing is clear; the landscape has shifted.

Commercial hiring surged across 2024 and 2025, with sales and marketing roles accounting for around 20–21% of all nonscientific vacancies and delivering 17–21% yearonyear growth in some quarters. Commercial capability has become one of the most indemand skillsets in UK life sciences. But at the same time, hiring is more selective than ever. Candidates tell us they feel “stuck”, unclear, or unsure how to stand out.

So, let’s break it down. This is what progression really looks like in 2026, and how you can move forward with confidence.

Capability-first progression

Job titles still matter, but employers want capability – the ability to move accounts, influence pathways, shape narratives, accelerate adoption, forecast accurately and support evidence-led decisions.

That’s why candidates now progress by showing what they deliver, not simply what they’ve held as a title.

Our Capability Formula to help candidates communicate this clearly:

  1. Skill
  2. Context
  3. Outcome
  4. Evidence

This is the language commercial leaders now use internally, especially in Q2 planning. It’s what they respond to in interviews. And it’s often the difference between “good candidate” and “promotion-ready candidate.”

Clear pathways are emerging (even if they look different)

The traditional ‘Sales/KAM/National/Marketing’ ladder isn’t the only route – there are four capability-led progression patterns:

  1. a) Sales – Key Account Management

Because ICS/ICB navigation and multistakeholder influence matter more each year.

  1. b) KAM – Market Access

Candidates with strong value communication and pathway awareness transition well.

  1. c) Marketing – Commercial Ops or Product Strategy

Where data confidence and evidencebased messaging translate seamlessly.

  1. d) Sales or Marketing – Digital Health/Medtech growth roles

Especially in AI-supported diagnostics, SaaS, and workflow optimisation.

These pathways weren’t as accessible even three years ago, but the demand for strategic commercial capability has widened the options.

What employers are looking for in 2026

Here’s the part candidates always ask us:

“What do hiring managers actually want now?”

Across pharma, biotech, medtech and digital health, the expectations are increasingly consistent. Employers want people who can show:

  1. Strategic thinking

Not just activity, but how you prioritised accounts, messages or access routes.

  1. Evidencebased value communication

The ability to build simple, credible, outcome-driven messaging that aligns with ICB/ICS decision-making.

  1. Stakeholder influence

Understanding clinical, operational, procurement and pathway priorities.

  1. Data and digital confidence

Not technical skills, just the ability to interpret dashboards, use AIenabled tools, and validate insights.

  1. Real-world outcomes
  • Adoption wins
  • Access progress
  • Revenue uplift
  • Efficiency improvements

These are the markers of progression.

Common barriers and how to break through them

Barrier 1: You’re describing tasks, not impact

Fix: Re-write your CV using the Capability Formula. Convert three responsibilities into outcome-led achievements.

Barrier 2: You’re struggling to sound strategic

Fix: Prepare one “Why this target?” or “Why this approach?” story. That alone can enhance your interview presence.

Barrier 3: You’re unsure how to talk about access or pathways

Fix: Add one example, however small, of how you’ve aligned with market access, tailored messaging or addressed pathway blockers.

Barrier 4: You’re low in AI or digital confidence

Fix: Use simple AI tasks weekly, such as call summaries, value message refinement, customer research. It builds confidence fast.

Barrier 5: You’re waiting for the perfect moment

Fix: Progression likes momentum. Set a 30day plan: rewrite capability stories, refresh your profile, apply for capability-aligned roles, speak to a recruiter.
