Matt Hancock to give keynote speech at health tech event

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, is to give a keynote speech on the second day of the GIANT Health health technology event.

GIANT Health, set up by Oxford-based American-born technology entrepreneur Barry Shrier, is an annual conference dedicated to the promotion of health technology that improves the outcomes of people all over the world.

The event celebrates the value of the contributions to health tech innovation from diverse people including inventors, app developers, clinicians, corporate enterprises, the investment community, healthcare service administrators and startups.

This festival of digital health is attended by healthcare professionals globally and is set to attract over 2000 delegates, 325 speakers, 150 startups and include 125 hours of content.

Its mission is to educate, share learnings, network and accelerate social, technological and business developments in a friendly and informal environment.

Opening both days of the conference is the Chairman of GIANT, London-based Professor Shafi Ahmed, a cancer surgeon, global educator and visionary, plus co-founder of a virtual reality (VR) company that provides novel ways to educate students.

Other speakers include:

  • Dr Janani Param, producer of the ‘Future is Femtech’ strand which will showcase the latest developments in this fast-growing field
  • Rose Acton who will discuss reproductive health and fertility
  • Emergency medicine doctor and broadcaster Dr Saleyha Ahsan, who will discuss global issues in women’s health and how to support them with technology
  • Simon Hooper of Health-Connected, who will be showcasing their highly innovative Alexa-integrated RemindMeCare app
  • Dr Michal Wlodarski, Principal, Cambridge Innovation Consulting (CamIn)
  • Jacob Skinner, CEO, Thrive Wearables, who is working with people and technology to create user-driven products that offer real value.

IBM Watson Health, Amazon, Novartis, Sanofi, Pearson and diabetes care company, Ascensia, are also all participating in the event.

Other subject matter includes Artificial Intelligence (AI) for next generation drug discovery, blockchain in healthcare, medicinal cannabis tech, revolutionising healthcare with immersive technology, tech innovation in tackling diabetes and wearable wellness.

Matt Hancock said: “I want the UK to become the home of health tech, to complement our world-leading life science, artificial intelligence and genomic sectors and some of the best technology companies on the planet.

“We must embrace this coming wave of technology and transform our NHS into an ecosystem of innovation and enterprise so patients benefit from the latest treatments.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the pioneering companies at GIANT Health and identifying ways we can work together to revolutionise healthcare.”

Barry Shrier, founder of GIANT, said: “We feel honoured that the Health Secretary will see for himself the amazing innovation and enterprise on show, designed to deliver the best possible outcomes for society at large.”

GIANT Health takes place Wednesday 21 – Thursday 22 November 2018 at Chelsea Football Club, Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, London SW6 1HS.
